The Yenching Academy offers a 1-year Master of Chinese Studies program (in English) designed to prepare an elite class of future leaders to meet the challenges of the 21st century global landscape.
- All students of the Yenching Academy will be Yenching Scholars.
Yenching Scholars receive a full tuition scholarship, accommodation in the residential college, and a stipend to cover living expenses.
Yenching Scholars not only engage in and develop their own learning experiences, but also work with the pioneers in their field to develop and apply innovative research in the areas of humanities and social sciences.
This Chinese Studies program integrates interdisciplinary approaches, pluralistic perspectives, and cutting-edge research to equip scholars with a rich understanding of Chinese Studies. Scholars will also build on this rich understanding by gaining expertise in one of six concentrations.

The Yenching Learning Experience.
Yenching Scholars are also deeply immersed into Chinese culture through cultural excursions throughout various parts of China and an intensive Chinese language program taken along within their degree studies. Further, Yenching Scholars have exclusive access to prominent guest lectures, world-renowned visiting faculty, visits to leading domestic and international companies, organizations, and government institutions, and special seminars.
Scholars work closely with the faculty and are required to enrich their academic knowledge outside the classroom by completing an internship or conducting a Field Study Intensive, which are guided by a faculty mentor.
Scholars can gain practical “hands-on” learning experience at one of Yenching Academy's partners, which comprise of over 100 leading international and domestic corporations, government institutions, and NGOS. These internships are designed to complement a scholar's concentration area and is integrated into the curriculum, as well as guided by a faculty member.
- Field Study Intensives
Rather than limiting research to the confinements of the classroom, Yenching Scholars are required to participate in field studies around China, in which they engage in on-site research projects in their area of concentration with a faculty member. These field studies not only provide a richer learning experience, but also engage scholars in in-depth research projects.
The inaugural class of 100 Yenching Scholars will begin in the September of 2015. Yenching Scholars will comprise of a diverse group of talented young leaders who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, innovative thought, and a commitment to the betterment of society.
Yenching Scholars will reflect the richness of culture and academic, religious, ethnic, and socio-economic diversity represented across the globe.
As Yenching Scholars is a highly competitive master's program, applicants must possess excellent academic backgrounds and personal statements and extracurricular activities that highlight a passion for social engagement and service. Applicants should also have a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in a particular field.
