Wu Qing, chairman of Shanghai Stock Exchange, was elected chairman of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE)on Thursday.
Wu was elected at the WFE's 57th General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand. It is the first time that a leader of a Chinese mainland stock exchange has been elected to a leading role at an international organization in this sector.
"I am honored to be elected chairman," Wu said. In the following year, Wu hopes that developed markets will share experience and expertise with exchanges in emerging markets.
The WFE, founded in 1961, has 67 formal members that cover the world's major exchanges.
Six exchanges from the Chinese mainland are members of the WFE.
