The original place of Tibetan incense, Tuanba village, lies a river, called “the water of ahimsa”. Wood sign at the entrance to the village records the history that Sang Buzha invented a wooden waterwheel in order to grind up fragrant cypress as the raw material of Tibetan incense. He was in a burst of benevolence when he saw fish hanged in the waterwheel. So Tibetan Saint, Sang Buzha, set a stone tablet, writing “Fish mustn't be into this river.” It seems that fish can understand his intention, because there is no fish in the river for thousands of years. Traditional raw material of Tibetan incense has a lot, but normally Cypress trunks and Elm trunks, then adding several Tibetan medicine and flavouring together and rubbing including saffron, sandalwood, shuianxi, eaglewood and caokou, etc. There is difference in Tibetan incense between used in Buddhand and used in room. For example, some Tibetan incense has effect of tranquilization, adding different Tibetan medicine according to use and effect. For example, Tibetan incense in Tunba village is based on cypress which take from Nyingchi from ancient times. It will be ground up by waterwheel and made of square tiles to store up.
