Second-child policy affects women's employment: report

Updated 2016-11-24 18:01:30

(ECNS) -- Employment rate among Chinese women continues to drop while the second-child policy may further aggravate the situation, according to a recent report by Labor Market Research Center under Beijing Normal University.

Titled "China Labor Market Report 2016," it noted a continuous drop in employment over the past decade, with a faster pace for women than men. However, the rate for Chinese women and the discrepancy for different genders are still above the world average, it was added.

It said women still face glass ceilings in job promotion even if they have a higher education level than their male colleagues.

The second-child policy may further squeeze the room for women in the job market, it stated.

The preference for male employees is still common among employers, while women who intend to have a second child may face discrimination in job-hunting, training and promotion.

Mothers who have left their jobs for a long time also need vocational training, but the demand has not been satisfied, the report added.
