A preliminary check has found one person dead after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Xinjiang in northwest China on Friday night.
Reports say the fatality was caused by house collapses. The quake jolted Akto County, which borders Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, at about 10:30 pm at a depth of 10 kilometers.
There have been reports of collapsed houses near the epicenter, about 170 km away from Kashgar Prefecture. Police have evacuated the residents from homes at risk of collapsing.
The China Earthquake Administration has activated a level-III emergency response and sent a work team to the quake-hit area. An emergency response was also initiated by the regional seismological bureau.
