Drunk’s death leads to murder charge

Updated 2016-12-01 14:05:29 Shanghai Daily

A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for driving over a drunk lying on the ground and causing his death as he failed to get him medical help in time, Pudong People's Court said on Wednesday.

The driver, surnamed Hou, was found guilty of murder.

He called the police after the accident, which took place on Yanchao Highway in January, but instead of reporting the truth, only said that he found someone lying there, according to the court.

The victim, surnamed Wang, didn't have injuries on his body, but died at home soon after his relatives were summoned to the scene by the police, the court said.

Forensics showed that he had died of injuries in the chest as a result of being run over.

Hou later admitted he had ran over Wang and had lied to the police.

The court said Hou had compensated Wang's family with 80,000 yuan (,600).
