Shanghai Museum to build Pudong division

Updated 2016-12-22 10:06:23 Global Times

Located in one of the biggest metropolises in the world, Shanghai Museum is renowned across the globe. As such, it is preparing to expand into Pudong New Area, according to thepaper.cn.

Museum director Yang Zhigang said that the new division is expected to be finished sometime before 2020.

It will be located on the west side of Shanghai Science & Technology Museum covering an area of 100,000 square meters.

"On weekends and holidays, I always noticed long lines outside the entrances of Shanghai Museum. We had to limit the number of visitors per day below 8,000, and therefore many people were kept out," Yang said.

"To meet the growing demand of local citizens, building a new museum is of great necessity for Shanghai."

Yang pointed out that exhibitions in the new division will focus on ancient Chinese arts as well as Shanghai-specific culture and arts.
