Construction started yesterday on a Fengxian District museum in Nanqiao Town.
The museum will exhibit the history of the area and how local people fought against aggression and natural disasters in times past, officials said.
The Fengxian Urban Museum, which includes the urban planning exhibition hall of the district, will be completed in September 2018, said Ma Ruhua, project manager for the construction.
"It will exhibit both the history and future of Fengxian as well as become an important public venue for residents to take part in various activities," said Hua Yuan, the district director.
The museum will exhibit pottery, bronze vessels and coins unearthed from the ancient Fengcheng and Nanqiao towns dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), along with traditional costumes, clothes and spinning machines that were once ubiquitous in the area.
The history of how local people fought against the Wokou — "Japanese pirates" in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) — as well as the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression will be showcased in the museum, said Zong Quanlin, chief of the district's culture authority.
"More exhibits are being collected from the public and the authority has begun designing the exhibition arrangement for the new museum," Zong said.
Currently, the district exhibits its cultural relics at a temporary exhibition hall on Jiefang Road E. covering 2,200 square meters, which Zong said was inadequate to showcase the full history and culture of Fengxian.
The new museum, covering 20,000 square meters, is being built along Jinhai Lake known as the Shanghai Fish due to its fish-shaped design.
The museum near the belly of the "fish" will comprise three separate buildings, attached to each other.
It is designed by the Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, who designed the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London.
Some five-star hotels will be built near the museum.
Construction also started yesterday on a dozen projects nearby — new roads, a park, kindergarten and a residents' activity center near the lake to develop the rural Nanqiao area into a "new city," the district government said.
The main structure of Shanghai Fish lake has been completed, which covers 8.7 square kilometers and will become the centerpiece of Nanqiao New City after its completion.
