Men detained for stealing black swan from park

Two men were detained after they cooked a black swan they stole from a Shanghai park.

Police were notified after employees at Xujiahui Park recently noticed one of the park's five black swans was missing.

A review of surveillance footage showed the two men sneak into the park during the early hours on April 20 and making off with the bird.

One of the duo, surnamed Zhou, told police they had originally intended to do some midnight fishing at the park when they spotted the swan strolling on a pavement.

Zhou told police they did not intentionally kill the swan, but rather it died on their way back home. That's when the two decided to cook its carcass.

"We thought it would be a waste to throw it away," said Zhou, adding that they "didn't like the taste."

Police are investigating.
