China National Engineering Laboratory was recently set up by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, Anhui Province to develop AI technology by learning human brain mechanisms.

It is also tasked with promoting the domestic industry development of brain-inspired chips, brain-inspired robots and other emerging industries.

"Brain-inspired intelligence is an important way to develop AI technology. The development of brain-inspired intelligence can reveal ways of information processing in the human brain, which is conducive to completing AI technology systems and promoting industry development," Wan Lijun, the laboratory's director general and president of USTC said.

USTC was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission of China to take the lead in the construction of the laboratory in January 2017, building a brain-inspired intelligence technology research platform as well as doing R&D and engineering of brain-inspired cognitive and neural computing, brain-inspired chips and system and brain-inspired intelligent robots.

According to the laboratory's director Wu Feng, executive director of the School of Information Science and Technology of USTC, three major bottleneck problems need to be overcome: brain mechanism cognition is not clear, the brain-inspired computing model and algorithm is not accurate, and the calculation structure and capacity is constrained. In the future, the laboratory will concentrate on solving these three problems.

In addition, the laboratory is to take responsibility for promoting the industrialization development of AI technology in China and conducting R&D on core chips and operating systems for brain-inspired intelligence, as well as of robots based on the neural network.
