Thumbs up for man who quietly lent wheelchair user a hand

An act of kindness neither requires permission, nor expects thanks -- but Wu Song never imagined a little gesture would move so many.

The Chinese police officer became somewhat of an Internet celebrity -- and an object of admiration for many -- overnight after a photo of him quietly lending a wheelchair user a hand (literally) gained traction on China's Twitter-like Weibo.

When a user of a wheelchair entered the subway car where Wu was sitting on Line 4 in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province, he decided to instantly help stabilize the chair.

The off-duty policeman discreetly put one hand on the handrim and placed his foot under the wheel to prevent the chair from moving. He did so without lifting his head up as he was using his phone.

The wheelchair user could also be seen holding the grab bar.

Wu remained in the same position throughout the stranger's journey, which crossed 10 stations, and did not budge until the man got off the subway car, a witness said.

The picture was posted by the official account of Chengdu Subway on Weibo on Tuesday, triggering an avalanche of warm messages and bringing Wu under the spotlight.

"Our society does not lack compassion, it lacks the eyes to find it and the words that praise it," a user who goes by the name @xihuangdeyangzi commented.

"Chengdu is now more beautiful because of him," another user @qingqingqing said.

With benevolence and beauty, Wu also seemed to tick the right boxes for plenty of online bachelorettes.

"Does he have a girlfriend?" inquired @xiaojie.

"He is the most beautiful man I have ever seen," @amingaGirl stated.

The law enforcer told local news website The Cover that his "hand and foot were numb after exerting effort to hold the man's wheelchair." He noted that it was only a simple gesture and called on people to follow his suit, and help whenever they can.
