A recycled packaging box Suning is hoping to utilize for its deliveries.
Chinese retailing giant Suning is launching a new line of recyclable delivery boxes, reports CCTV News.
Unlike the traditional packaging box made of corrugated cardboard, the new box is plastic and collapsible.
After you receive your package, the courier will wait for you to unpack your item, then take back the container.
At a cost of around 25 yuan each, the plastic containers have a shelf-life of around a thousand deliveries, meaning it should eventually cut Suning's packaging costs down to 0.025 yuan per delivery.
The company intends to have 200,000 recyclable boxes in-service across 13 cities in China by the time the "Double Eleven" shopping day arrives on November 11.
Statistics from the State Postal Bureau show some 9.92 billion cardboard boxes and 8.27 billion plastic bags were used for packaging in China in 2015, which generated over 4 million tons of wastes.
"Green and smart express delivery is a new trend in e-commerce," said an expert, "Express companies are adopting green logistics, which is driven - in part - by rising paper prices and an increasing public awareness of environmental protection."
