A plane belonging to Iberia Airlines departing from Shanghai Pudong International Airport to Madrid, Spain turned back just one hour after it took off at 10:55 a.m. on Monday, Knews reported Tuesday.
The plane issued a 7700 emergency code after a passenger began suffering from a sudden illness. It flew back under instructions from the operation command center of the airport. Doctors waiting at the airport examined the sick passenger immediately after the plane landed. The patient was later sent to Shanghai East International Medical Center.
Some netizens questioned why the plane did not land in Beijing or Tianjin. Shen Wei, vice president of Spring Airlines, said that the plane was too heavy to land at that time and it had to burn some oil first, which would take about the same time to fly back to Shanghai.
