Russia launches heavy rocket with military satellite

The Russian Defense Ministry said a military satellite has been sent into space early Thursday.

"The Proton-M heavy carrier rocket with a military satellite has been launched from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan," the ministry said in a press release.

The rocket was lifted at 1:12 a.m. Moscow time (2215 GMT Wednesday), the ministry said, adding that the process was smooth.
