London police said Friday that officers are investigating an alleged sexual assault against Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey.
The Metropolitan Police said that they are investigating "an allegation of sexual assault" in Lambeth area in south London in 2008.
The British police force on Friday did not identify Spacey by name, but said that the department's child abuse and sexual offenses unit is investigating the reported assault after it was referred to police two days ago.
"On 1 November, City of London police referred an allegation of sexual assault to the Metropolitan police service," a Scotland Yard spokesman said on Friday. "It is alleged a man assaulted another man in 2008 in Lambeth. Officers from the child abuse and sexual offences command are investigating."
According to media reports, the man, now aged 32, alleged that Spacey abused him after he passed out at Spacey's home, where they had shared a drink after the complainant, then aged 23, asked Spacey to help him with his career.
The incident took place near The Old Vic theatre, where Spacey, a U.S. actor, was artistic director from 2004 to 2015, local media reported.
The theatre said in a statement on Thursday that it was "deeply dismayed to hear the allegations levied against Kevin Spacey." It urged people with concerns to share details via a confidential email address, promising to "investigate the complaints with our external advisers."
The 58-year-old Spacey has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple current and former employees of the TV show House of Cards, as the scandal surrounding him continues to grow.
Several men have made allegations of sexual harassment in the United States, Britain and other countries this week against Spacey.
Spacey is an American actor, film and television director, producer, screenwriter, and singer. He began his career as a stage actor during the 1980s before obtaining supporting roles in film and television.
