A performance by 5,000 Bharatnatyam dancers in Chennai city in the south of India set a new Guinness world record on Friday.

A performance by 5,000 Bharatnatyam dancers in Chennai city in the south of India set a new Guinness world record on Friday. The dancers performed the classical dance for 26 minutes.

Students and artists from across the state participated in the event at Vel University. The previous record for the classical dance was set last year, which gathered 2,100 dancers.

Bharatnatyam is a classical Indian dance form dating as far back as 4000 B.C.
