Over 80,000 people went through identification checks at over 100 Human Face Recognition checkpoints before they entered the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, on August 8.
The system, developed by the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) over a period of one year, can identify people with efficient accurateness.
It is the first time that such technology was adopted as security measures in the Olympic history, a source with the CAS said.
Ticket holders for the opening ceremony are required to submit their personal information and photos in advance. When they pass the security checkpoints their facial expressions will checked against databases.
Human face recognition is the most accurate form of identification check and has huge potential, the CAS website said.
