The "ecological supermarket" will be built in Beijing and will use 30 percent less water and electricity than other Carrefour stores, said Jose Luis Duran, chairman of Carrefour`s management board.

Recyclable sacks and special electric trams will also be part of the store¨s plan, he told journalists.

Last year in China, Carrefour had revenues of 2.0 billion euros, only about 2.0 percent of the group¨s total worldwide revenues.

"It will still take some time for (China) to become truly significant ... but we have opened more stores in China in 10 years than we opened in Spain and Brazil in 30 years," Duran said.

Carrefour currently operates 76 supermarkets in China. In 2006, Carrefour opened seven new stores in country and will introduce another 13 this year, he said.

The new stores represent one-fifth of Carrefour`s expansion worldwide for 2006, Duran said.

Carrefour has also opened 230 Dia stores in China, with 60 more of the low-cost retail outlets planned to open this year.

Concerning future acquisitions, the Carrefour officials refused to go into any details but did not deny that the group could be looking at acquiring the China-based stores of Taiwan retailer Trust-Mart.

"We are looking at a number of enterprises," said Jean-Luc Chereau, head of Carrefour`s China operations department.

Trust-Mart "could be a part of the list."
