China says rapid appreciation of Renminbi not good for the world

    BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Chen Deming said here Wednesday that if the Renminbi, China's currency, appreciated too rapidly, it would cause fluctuations in the Chinese economy that would not be positive for the world.

    Chen made the remarks at a news briefing on the sideline of the third China-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue, which opened here Wednesday. 

China calls for expanding trade and investment with U.S.

    BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States need to strengthen cooperation in commerce and trade and solve disputes through dialogue, Vice-Minister of Commerce Chen Deming said here on Wednesday.

    Chen made the remarks at a press briefing during the Third China-U.S. Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED), which began on Wednesday and will run through Thursday. 

China, U.S. to sign deal on environmental protection in import, export

    BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States agreed Wednesday to sign a memorandum of cooperation on protecting human health and environment in the area of import and export.

    Li Changjiang, director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, said he expects to sign the deal Thursday with Stephen I. Johnson, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 

Chinese official urges U.S. to clarify foreign investment policy

    BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official on Wednesday urged the United States to clarify the range of sectors where investment by foreign firms might be required to undergo scrutiny.

    Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice minister of China's National Development and Reform Commission, urged the U.S. government to clarify the definition of "national security," which it said was its main reason for tightening checks on investors.

    BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi praised U.S. domestic efforts in blocking protectionist legislation against China during the opening ceremony of the 18th Sino-U.S. Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) here on Tuesday.

    She assured the American officials in attendance that China's door would stay wide open to the outside world. Full story
