BEIJING, April 1 -- Folk opera has about 90 years history in China and some 400 works have been created.

"White-Haired Girl" and "Sister Jiang" are the most popular pieces. But this song style has not been well represented at the 13th CCTV Young Singers' Contest.

This aria is selected from the opera "The Injustice Done to Dou E", presented by Liang Xiaoli from Yuncheng City, North China's Shanxi Province.

Liang Xiaoli, contestant, said, "Folk opera is a challenge to a singer, especially the performing and the breath control."

Less than one tenth of contestants in the finals chose folk opera, mainly because of the high skill level required.

Judge Wan Shanhong says if the competitors can perform the folk operas at a high level, other works will seem easy.

So far 11 group finals have ended, and the group from the PLA General Political Department is currently in the lead.
