June 18 - Six crew members, including their captain, were detained by maritime police on Sunday after their vessel hit a 1,600-meter-long bridge causing part of it to collapse in southern Guangdong Province.

Nine people believed to be on the bridge at the time are missing.

Shi Guide, captain of the "Nanguiji 035", and five sailors including Huang Yuyou, have been detained, said the Guangdong Maritime Affairs Bureau. The barge, loaded with sand, sailed out the main navigation channel of the Xijiang River and hit the bridge on Friday. About 200 meters of the bridge collapsed.

The bridge connects Jiujiang Township in Nanhai district of Foshan to neighbouring Heshan city.

Sections of the collapsed bridge fell onto the bow of the boat, partially submerging it. All 10 crew members were rescued, and two were treated in hospital for bruises and released.

Video from traffic monitors shows four vehicles carrying seven people, and two bridge workers were on the bridge when it collapsed. Divers and search and rescue boats have yet to locate the vehicles or missing people, said Huang Yaxuan, an official of the bureau.
