Watch from Home, Avoid the Crowds
Beijing citizens have been advised to watch the opening ceremony telecast and celebrate at home on Friday evening to reduce traffic congestion when the Olympics begin.
The municipal traffic administration also urges people not to drive near the Olympic venues or the city's main arteries, so as not to impede the arrival of foreign athletes and officials, Web site Eastday.com reports.
Main roads around the National Stadium, the site of the opening ceremony, will be blocked starting from 11:30 a.m. Friday to make room for the vehicles serving the ceremony, the site reports.
More than 160,000 people are expected to swarm to the Bird's Nest Stadium when the games open, earlier reports said.
Government staff have been asked to take the day off on Friday to ease pressure on roads and the public transportation system.
