BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Two earthquakes measuring 5.9 and 5.4 on the Richter scale respectively struck central Taiwan in a little more than two hours on Thursday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

The Nantou county, about 54 km south-southeast of Taichung, was jolted by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake 5:32 p.m. (Beijing time) Thursday, the center said.

The epicenter was located at 23.9 degrees north and 120.7 degrees east, with a depth of 7 km.

The same region was shaken again at 7:34 p.m., when a slightly milder quake occurred at about 6 km beneath the earth's surface, the center said.

So far, the earthquake has not caused serious damage on the island except for Nantou's Mingjian Township, where houses cracked and fractured and electricity was cut off.

Taiwan's fire brigade authorities said a female student in the Taichung county had suffered from minor injuries in the head after part of the classroom ceiling fell off during the first earthquake.
