KABUL, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A group of Taliban insurgents ambushed one police post Thursday night in southern Afghan province of Kandahar killing at least eight policemen, wounding one another, said an official on Friday.

General Mateuallah Khan, the newly appointed provincial police chief told Xinhua that Taliban militants launched the raid on one police post in the Panjwayi district of Kandahar province late at the night.

"Militants threw grenades into the office room then broke into the post in the cover of small-fire," he said. "Eight policemen were killed, one was wounded and two others were missing."

Mateuallah Khan said the incident which was thought to be some spies in police team linked with Taliban rebels is now under investigation.

Attacks on Afghan and international troops are on the rise during past weeks especially in southern and eastern Afghanistan where the Taliban militants continue to demonstrate their strength through suicide and roadside bombings.

Militancy and conflicts have claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people with some 700 civilians so far this year in Afghanistan.
