DAMASCUS, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Syria received on Wednesday 114 remains of Arab fighters as part of a prisoner swap between the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement and Israel, the official SANA news agency reported.

The bodies, including 37 Syrians, 64 Palestinians, eight Tunisians, three Libyans, one Iraqi and a Nigerian, were turned over by Hezbollah from Lebanon.

Syrian Minister of State for Red Crescent Affairs Bashar al-Shaar received the bodies at the Jedeidet Yabous border point between Syria and Lebanon at noon.

They are among the nearly 200 human remains received by Hezbollah from Israel last week.

Hundreds of relatives also welcomed the coffins of the fighters at the border, which were later paraded through the center of Damascus.

Under a UN-sponsored swap deal, Israel handed over the remains of nearly 200 Arab fighters to Hezbollah last Wednesday and Thursday and released five Lebanese captives.

In return, Hezbollah returned the bodies of two Israeli soldiers captured on July 12, 2006 to the Jewish state.
