My wildlife focus of my brief visit was the mangrove habitat of the proboscis monkey near Sepilok. There I hired a boat and guide and soon we had located a troupe. They kept their distance though and I needed my 300mm lens to bridge the distance. Mature males have a comical appearance, with their huge noses and pot bellies

Found solely in Borneo, the estimated present population of 3000 puts it on the severely endangered list. Even in 1994 I was struck by the number of logging ships present. No other tourists were to be seen, but eco-tourism has boomed since then and if carefully managed this may assure their future.
