Madagascar is the only home for lemurs-primates like the monkeys, apes...and man. There are 28 species, with another 14 having disappeared since the first human habitation around A.D 500. Although all the surviving species face habitat loss there are hopeful signs: the Golden Bamboo Lemur was only discovered in 1986 and that same year the Aye-aye, a species feared extinct, was rediscovered. Eco-tourism is providing funding to save the surviving forests.
