Hi I’m Mark Berthold. Welcome to www.china.com’s Mark’s World.
I have always been astonished by natural beauty. Growing up in New Zealand helped. Voraciously I consumed books about natural history and copies of National Geographic cast an enduring spell-and challenge. Nonetheless, after studying philosophy, I trained to become a lawyer. In 1985 I took up a legal post in Hong Kong and later helped develop a new law on protecting data privacy. I subsequently co-authored with Professor Raymond Wacks a book on protecting personal data in the global environment which is now in its second edition.
But my curiosity about the natural world and other cultures remained undiminished. Vitally for my photo opportunities my employer provided me, annually, 6 weeks holiday and an around-the-world air ticket. So I packed my bags with two cameras, 4 lenses, and 30 rolls of film for 13 successive years to visit such places as the Africa, the Amazon, Madagascar, and Indonesia. As well the cultural capitals of Europe and North America.-30 countries in all. Finally, last year, I scanned the accumulated thousands of transparencies and it is these pictures-never before publicly displayed-that are featured exclusively in this column. Many show a world that has already irrevocably changed since I took these shots: a simpler and more pristine world not yet confronting “globalization” and “global warming”. But Mark’s World is not just a nostalgic exercise: I am now based in Beijing-the 2008 Olympic city- and future installments will also focus on contemporary China as it confronts massive social change.
In future contributions I will add to my photo articles my music and fiction. Your comments are always appreciated. If you want to pursue issues such as purchasing picture files, hardcopy publishing options or photography contract work then email me at mark.berthold@gmail.com.
Most importantly: enjoy!
