Xiude Pagoda at Quyang of Hebei Province

2004-09-06 17:09:29

The pagoda is located several hundred meters northwest of Beiyue Temple in the county town of Quyang. It was built in 1019 during the Northern Song Dynasty.

It is an octagonal, ornamental, brick pagoda of five storeys, more than twenty meters high, and stands on the rear part of a square stone platform along the axis. The lower part of the pagoda is an octagonal pedestal with double layers of lotus petals. On the front of the first storey there is a door, and inside is a statue of Buddha. Three layers of lotus petals separate the first storey from the middle part of the pagoda, which looks like a huge bouquet and occupies almost half of the whole structure. Since they are located in the middle of the pagoda, the ornaments are more conspicuous than on other pagodas. A closer look reveals that the "bouquet‘ is composed of five rows of relief sculptures of small square pagodas. Each row has four small pagodas on one side, and all the small pagodas rest on lotus petals. Though such decorative patterns are simpler than animals and plants, they create a very impressive artistic effect. The most spectacular feature of the pagoda is the construction of another four octagonal storeys on top of the bouquet-shaped middle part, which is unique among ornamental pagodas.
