Catch the leaves in autumn

Daocheng, Sichuan Province, West China

A Tibetan county located at the southwest rim of Sichuan Province, Daocheng is considered a mystical highland. It boasts holy mountains, some of which are named by Dalai Lamas. Tibetan Buddhist temples are dotted all over these mountains, adding another mystic aspect to Daocheng.

One of the holy mountains, Echu Mountain, is well known for its autumnal tints: the deep red, brilliant yellow and verdant green make the mountain look gorgeous.

Daocheng is located in a highland area and tourists need to take precautions to counter high altitude sickness. September is Daocheng’s rainy season and visitors are advised to take umbrellas with them. If tourists are traveling on their own by car, they should make sure they have extra provisions including gas, as Daocheng is sparsely populated with few resources.

Juzizhou (Mandarin orange shoal), Hunan Province

An island, Juzizhou gets its name because it is abundant in mandarin oranges and fall is when they are harvested. A park is built on the island where thousands of orange trees are planted. Tourists come to Juzizhou during the autumn, not only to enjoy a beautiful view of golden ripe oranges, but to eat them too.

Hunan is the hometown of Chairman Mao. Changsha, the city where Juzizhou is located, has the middle school Chaiman Mao attended when he was young. He also once wrote a special poem dedicated to Juzizhou making the island famous nationwide.

West Lake, Zhejiang Province

Serving as a backdrop to many Chinese romantic stories, the West Lake view is charming in all four seasons. In the fall, tourists can appreciate the famous scenery of Pinghu Qiuyue, or “autumn moon over calm lake”, one of West Lake’s 10 most endearing landscapes. At West Lake, visitors can also find red maple leaves, reed flowers and cherries in the fall.

Local Hongzhou dishes are also worth a try. One of them is called Changhua Sanshi, or “three stones in Changhua city”, which features some local fish, chicken and mushrooms.(Source: Chinadaily)
