As the Yellow River – which takes its Chinese name Huanghe from its yellow, muddy water – runs through the Loess Plateau in Shaanxi province, the northwestern Chinese province suffers from some of the most severe soil erosion in the country. Nevertheless, over the past few decades, local people have been working to control soil erosion and advance ecological conservation. As of 2020, Shaanxi had completed soil conservation work across a 55,000-square-km area of the Loess Plateau, with more than 34,000 dams being built, effectively blocking 5.8 billion tonnes of sludge by the end of 2019. Take a look at the local ecological conservation and restoration efforts in action. A file photo showing Yellow River's Taiji Bay in Yulin, Shaanxi province. [Photo: VCG]
