Global COVID-19 cases top 3 million, one-third of them in U.S.

Global COVID-19 cases crossed the 3 million mark Monday, with nearly one-third of them in the United States.

Global confirmed COVID-19 cases reached(达到 dádào)3,002,303 as of 1 p.m.(1700 GMT), and a total of 208,131 people worldwide have died(死亡 sǐwáng) of the disease, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The United States(美国 Měiguó), which remains the hardest-hit, reported 972,969 cases(病例 bìnglì) and more than 55,000 deaths related to coronavirus after the first case was reported in Washington state in January.

New York has 17, 515 deaths, more than any other state in the country. It's also the state with the highest number of confirmed cases -- 292,027.

Spain(西班牙 Xībānyá) and Italy(意大利 Yìdàlì) followed with 229,422 cases and 199,414 cases, respectively.

Other countries with over 100,000 cases included France(法国 Fǎguó), Germany(德国 Déguó), the United Kingdom(英国 Yīngguó) and Turkey(土耳其 Tǔ'ěrqí), the CSSE data showed.
